Living the D.R.E.A.M.

Here at Garden State Spine and Pain Institute at Soul Focus we believe in living the D.R.E.A.M. Dr. Raj came up with this lifestyle consisting of diet, rest, exercise, adjustments (chiropractic) and maintaining a positive mental attitude, as these are all keys to health and happiness. What exactly does it mean to be living the D.R.E.A.M.?

Diet

We all know how important a healthy diet is. In fact, we wrote a blog post about nutritional counseling and how important eating foods rich in sustenance is for your overall health. A balanced diet gives the body the nutrition it needs to function properly. Without a balanced diet, the body is more prone to disease, infection, poor performance, and fatigue. Foods that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, and low in unnecessary fats and sugars are key to a well balanced diet. Fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, dairy, and oils all make up what is referred to as the food pyramid, a daily healthy food plan. The United States Department of Agriculture has a calculator available online to help you figure out how much of each food you should be eating.

Rest

Rest is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Not only does it rejuvenate your body and mind but it also regulates your mood and is linked to learning and memory function.  While you are sleeping, your body is working to support optimal brain function and physical health. Sleep is especially important for children and teens as it helps support growth and development.

Regarding physical health, sleep is extremely important. Sleep is involved in the healing and repairing of your heart and blood vessels. On-going sleep deficiency can lead to many serious health complications. These complications include heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Your immune system relies on sleep to stay healthy. So remember to give yourself time to rest and to get a good night’s sleep.

Exercise

Exercise makes you feel better and have more energy throughout the day. There are so many great benefits of exercise. Here are a few of them:

  • Exercise helps control weight. Exercising can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weigh loss.
  • Exercise helps fight health conditions and diseases. Being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular physical activity can help prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls.
  • Exercise improves your mood and boosts your energy.
  • Exercise promotes better sleep.

Adjustments

Your spinal column is made up of 24 vertebrae that allow your body to move, twist, and bend. It also helps protect the nerve tissue that carries all communication between your brain and body. When two or more vertebrae aren’t working together properly it is called a subluxation. Subluxations can cause you to experience pain, discomfort, decreased mobility, and many other symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments help relieve subluxations enabling your body to heal itself from the symptoms they cause. Chiropractic adjustments have many benefits. Adjustments can help with:

  • Headaches
  • Back and neck conditions
  • Leg, knee, foot, and ankle pain
  • Arm, wrist, shoulder, or elbow pain
  • Stress and tension disorders
  • Bursitis
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Injuries
  • And more

Regular adjustments not only benefits preventative care but it also helps keep your body balanced, flexible, and feeling at its best.

Maintaining a Positive Mental Attitude

Life is always going to throw you lemons and as the saying goes, just make some lemonade. It is much easier to become negative than it is to remain optimistic. We all face different problems but remaining positive is important. Not only does it make you more pleasant to be around, but there are quite a few other benefits of maintaining a positive attitude including:

  • Increased motivation
  • Boosted self esteem
  • Decreased stress
  • Boosted immune system function

So remember to keep that smile on your face and think and remain positive.
