The Secret to Making Your Body a Lean, Fat Burning Machine
In 2006, at age 36, I realized that if I wanted to be around to see my kids graduate college, attend their weddings or meet my future grandchildren, I needed to get in shape and get healthy. I hadn’t been in a gym in 20 years so I started slowly. I quickly went from dreading my early morning visits to looking forward to them. It was my Zen time. I lost 50 pounds, 5 inches, and went down 3 pant sizes. After keeping the weight off for six months, I bought an entirely new wardrobe. It was the happiest day of my life. I decided right then and there that I was never going to put the weight back on. Easier said than done. Getting old stinks! Now at 45, my metabolism is slowing down, my muscles respond slower to exercise, it takes me longer to recover after rigorous workouts, and takes me longer to get back up to speed after a day or two break. Unlike anything else in life, this job gets harder as time goes on. Thank goodness for new technology.
The InBody 570, has kept me in the game. From the outhouse to indoor plumbing, from the rotary phone to the smartphone, the InBody far replaces the outdated bathroom scale. Just losing weight is NOT the goal! The goal is to reduce your percentage of body fat.
What is the InBody and How does it help? The InBody is a premier award winning body composition analyzer that provides results that are 98% accurate when compared to underwater weighing. Using bioelectrical impedance analysis, safe, low-level currents are sent through the body through the hand and foot electrodes. The impedance and the currents encounter are measured, and from there, your body composition is derived. With InBody’s patented technology, BIA has never been more highly correlated with gold standard methods until now. To the right is a picture from my personal InBody reports, please note that each column refers to a different test date. For the purpose of this discussion, I am going to stick to weight, muscle mass and % of body fat. I first tested myself on 10/06/15. At this time, my weight was 175.8, my skeletal muscle mass was 80.8 lbs., and my percentage of body fat was 20.6%. I wanted to lose some weight, but I didn’t understand what each indicator from the InBody was actually telling me, so I went about my normal routine in the gym and focused on my diet.
2 weeks and 2 days later, my third time on the InBody, I was mortified! I expected a pat on the back from the stupid machine. I knew I had lost weight. I felt it in the way my clothes felt on my body. I felt it in the way I carried myself. I lost 3.4 pounds in 2 weeks. However, my percentage of body fat went up and 1.8 lbs. of the weight loss was muscle mass. Yes, I lost, weight, but I got flabby! This was not good. Muscle mass drives the metabolism, the more muscle you have, the more active the metabolism is at burning fat. I lost muscle and increased body fat even though I lost 3.4 lbs. “OK”, I thought, “I need to hit the weights. I need to increase muscle mass to drive my metabolism to lose weight and decrease body fat percentage”
I was losing my fight with the InBody, and was getting frustrated! Lifting weights made me hungry! I gained 6.2 lbs. and only 2.7 of it was muscle. I was eating too much. I did record the highest amount of skeletal muscle mass than ever before, but my percentage of body fat stayed the same. Not bad, but I needed to attempt to lose some weight and decrease my percentage of body fat while holding on to my new found muscle.
I understood the game and how it was played. I was finally beating the machine. I kept my muscle mass while decreasing my weight and my percentage of body fat to the lowest recorded values since beginning my fight with the InBody. I’m not done! I have a long way to go. My next goal is to get my body fat percentage to 18%, muscle mass up to 83 lbs. and my weight to 172. I am up for the challenge from the Inbody, and thank it for fine tuning my workouts and giving me the tools to fight the good fight. The machine I love to hate!
